World Cup 2022 To Qataar: Atlanta Will Still Get Big-Time Soccer Soon

World Cup 2022 To Qataar: Atlanta Will Still Get Big-Time Soccer Soon

As previously fretted about here, Qatar’s bundle-stackin’ status helped power the tiny, sports-free country to its first World Cup bid. The United States reached the final round of voting, but three of five Korea voters jumped to Qatar’s side instead of climbing aboard the Red, White, and Blue, at which point the tie would be broken by BCS standings, just like the Big 12 South.

An analogy? Qatar: Auburn Tigers. The United States: Mississippi State. By that I mean Qatar won, of course, and the U.S. lost. Would never imply Qatar is as dirty as Auburn. In fact, the internet is happy to tell you Qatar is the least corrupt Middle Eastern nation, which is something like being the [insert any joke about anything in the world].

So no international championship soccer at a new stadium near the World Congress Center or The Stryper in Kennesaw. This is a bummer, but Major League Soccer will still make its way to Atlanta in the next decade. With another eight to twelve or whatever years to grow the game domestically, the States should get to host another World Cup relatively soon, and Atlanta’s hub status in a growing region will make it an even likelier host city when we do land the Cup. Even though I’ll be freaking 45 in 2026.

Hundreds of Indian students may be deported from US

Washington: The US expressed concern over any activity involving visa fraud, as several Indian students of a California-based University shut down by authorities on charges of illegal immigration were interrogated.

Hundreds of Indian students may be deported from US

Duped by the authorities of Tri-Valley University, which has now been shut down, hundreds of Indian students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, faced the threat of being deported back home after having lost their student visa status.

"Any activity involving visa fraud would obviously be of great concern to us. The investigation of that is done by law enforcement, obviously with our cooperation, since we are the ones who issue visas," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters at his daily news conference.

According to a federal complaint filed in a California court last week, the University helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status.

The university is said to have 1,555 students. As many as 95 per cent of these students are Indian nationals, the complaint said. The students are reported to have paid lakhs of rupees for obtaining a visa for their category and also for students work permit.

"Since 9/11, one of the areas that we as a government have strengthened is the tracking, so that if you come here on a student visa, you have to check in and you have to go to school. That is a requirement of that programme," Crowley said.

Meanwhile, reports from the San Francisco area said a number of students have been interrogated by federal authorities as part of their investigation against the Tri-Valley University, which is being charged of part of an effort to defraud, misuse visa permits, and indulge in money laundering and other crimes.

Investigations by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) found that while students were admitted to various residential and on-line courses of the university and on paper lived in California, but in reality they "illegally" worked in various parts of the country as far as Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

ICE has called it as a "Sham University".

The ICE investigations found that more than half of these students were reported to be residing in a single apartment located in Sunnyvale California.

During the course of the investigation ICE found that the university gave the residential address of its students in order to conceal that they did not live in California, said the court papers.

For a student to maintain an active immigration status, they must show proof that they are making reasonable process toward completing coursework and physically attending classes.

Federal investigating authorities are now sweeping out on every such student, who paid lakhs for obtaining students visa and also students work permit.

Several of them have been interrogated, thus creating a panic reaction among the Indian student community.

Many of the students from Andhra Pradesh who were planning to join the university for the new semester have cancelled their US travel plans. Classes were scheduled to start on January 10 after the winter break.

It is understood that many of these students are planning to leave the country as soon as possible as they are being interrogated.

There are unconfirmed reports of some of the students being detained and deportation process has been started against them.

Once the university has been shut down, the students who come on F-1 visa, lose their status within a stipulated time.

AR Rahman bags two Oscar nominations for '127 Hours'

arr

LOS ANGELES: Indian music maestro A R Rahman has done it again! He received two nominations Tuesday for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards for the original score in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours " as well as original song If I Rise " for the same movie.

Rahman is sharing his nomination for best song category with Dido and Rolo Armstrong, who have penned the lyrics of "If I Rise". In a recent interview with IANS, Rahman had said he would be happy to receive a nomination, but isn't expecting an award this time.

"I'll be happy if I get nominations but I've got enough Oscars already for one lifetime. I don't think I'll get an Oscar. I'll enjoy the function and see it, but I don't think I'll be getting it," he said.

Soon after he lost out on the Golden Globe award for "127 Hours", the 45-year-old received a nomination for the same project at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts ( BAFTA )) awards.

Republic Day a showcase for India’s military

Is Republic Day a showcase for India’s military might?

India Republic Day Rehearsal

Our country’s cultural heritage and military might will on display tomorrow. The Republic Day parade has always been a proud moment for Indians at home and abroad when the nation showcases its military power and achievements.

On 26 January 1950, our nation became a republic and the constitution of India was born, but today Republic Day has become just another holiday for most of us and for the government just a ramp to bedazzle the world with a show of India’s military achievements.

Has Republic Day celebrations lost its essence and become more of a platform for India to exhibit its military might to the world. Or has it become a stage for India to brag about is accomplishments?

USA risks losing out to India, China: Obama

Washington: President Barack Obama on Wednesday warned that the US risked losing out to countries such as India and China in areas like in education, technology and research, noting they were undertaking investments in these areas.

Delivering his annual State of the Union address to the US Congress, Obama made three references to India in his hour-long speech during which he said his administration has built a "new partnership" with the south Asian country as part of his efforts to shape a world that favours peace and prosperity.

Obama, who visited India in November last, also referred to the recent business agreements with India and China that would create jobs in the US. "We have reset our relationship with Russia, strengthened Asian alliances, and built new partnerships with nations like India," Obama said in the address in which terrorism and war took a backseat with the President's focus being on education and economy.
Building new relationship with countries like India, Obama said is part of his efforts to shape a world that favours peace and prosperity. Obama also unveiled his blueprint to maintain American leadership in an increasingly competitive world marked by the surge of nations like India and China.

The blueprint has four key pillars--innovate, educate, build, reform and responsibility. Obama put forward a plan to help the US win the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the global competition.

"Nations like China and India realised that with some changes of their own, they could compete in this new world," he said, adding, "So they started educating their children earlier and longer, with greater emphasis on math and science. They are investing in research and new technologies."

On the other hand, Obama said, the quality of the American math and science education lagged behind that of many other nations and the country had fallen to ninth rank in terms of the proportion of young people with a college degree.

Obama also highlighted the importance of emerging markets like India and China in creating more jobs in the US. "Recently, we signed agreements with India and China that will support more than 250,000 jobs in the United States," Obama said.

While calling for new investments in American innovation, the US President also underscored the need to reform the way the government conducted business--by investing in what makes America stronger and cutting what doesn't.

The President's Budget will help increase the nation's R and D investments, as a share of GDP, to its highest levels since President John F Kennedy.

Obama also pledged to prepare an additional 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and math teachers by the end of the decade.

Obama's India trip most successful South Asia trip ever

US President Barack Obama's India visit in November was one of the most successful trips ever taken by a US President to South Asia, a top Administration official has said.

"President's November trip to India," the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Robert Blake, in his speech at the Syracuse University, New York, said turned out to be one of the most successful trips ever taken by an American president to South Asia.

The trip produced a number of significant new milestones that showed how US and India are working together to advance global peace, security and development and illustrate why Obama believes US relations with India constitute an "indispensable partnership" for the 21st century.

Blake said the big headline-maker was, of course, the President's endorsement of a reformed United Nations that includes India as a permanent member. "The endorsement of an Indian seat on a reformed UN Security Council, as a permanent member, reflects our confidence that it is a country with which we will be working ever more closely to advance global security and prosperity," he said.

During the trip, the Indian government positioned itself to take on a leading role in enhancing global stability by finalizing a $4.1 billion sale for ten C-17 Globe master III heavy lift transport aircraft.

US risks losing out to India, China: Obama US President Barack Obama's motorcade drives toward the Capitol Hill for his the State of Union speech in Washington, DC, on January 25, 2011. AFP

"Once all the aircraft have been delivered, ladies and gentlemen, India will have the second largest C-17 fleet in the world behind the United States -- a highly visible manifestation of the US -India defense partnership," he said.

"The purchase of six C-130J transport aircraft in 2008 will provide the Indian Air Force a strategic airlift and humanitarian response capability that is unique to the region and emblematic of India's ambitions to play an increasingly global role," Blake said.

Noting that the President and the Prime Minister agreed that in this increasingly inter-dependent world, the stability of, and our access to, the air, sea, space, and cyberspace domains is vital for the security and economic prosperity of all nations, Blake said the two leaders therefore agreed to launch a dialogue to explore ways the two countries can work together, as well as with other countries, to develop a shared vision for these critical domains to promote peace, security and development.

As leaders of the two largest democracies in the world, the President and Prime Minister launched a US-India Open Government Dialogue on how India and the US can democratize access to information, support global initiatives in this area, and share their own experience.

How good is India's Cricket World Cup 2011 squad

How good is India's World Cup squad

So much has already been said about the Indian cricket team chosen to do battle at the cricket World Cup that yet another round of post mortem didn't seem appealing enough. Mind you, this feeling of ennui had nothing to do with the fact that as a nation we adore debate or that everything that could be spoken and written about Team India has already been done.

How good is India's World Cup squad

It was more about a sense of deja vu. For, prior to India's triumph at the Lord's in 1983, we hardly ever discussed the pros and cons of our national cricket team. Sunny Gavaskar's painful 36 runs in 60 overs, Bishen Bedi's attempt to 'buy' wickets in the limited overs game and our regular ultra slo-mo fielding efforts meant that India stuck out like a sore thumb in the ODI format.

Thanks to Kapil's Devils, who turned world beaters despite being no-hopers four weeks prior to June 25, 1983, the team selection became as important as a one-day encounter. That no Indian team managed to win back the trophy since that balmy Sunday evening at the Lord's, hasn't in any way diluted the debate on team selection or highlighted its futility.

In the past 27 years, six teams have been chosen to represent India at the tournaments. Amongst them, only one managed to make the finals where they lost to a team that was arguably at the peak of its abilities. Each of these teams were ripped apart by critics and armchair experts though it was only in 2007 did we really plumb to the lows of the pre-1983 days.

One look at the current situation and it is not hard to fathom that nothing has changed. Once again the selection panel, this time headed by a man who was the top-scorer in the edition that India won, has put forth a list of 15 players who would joust with 13 other teams for getting their hands on the silverware.

How good is India's World Cup squad

On paper, the team looks strong as a nail. Add to this, the fact that we would be playing in our backyard and the stakes rise further for India doing an encore of 1983. Any batting line-up that boasts of one-day cricket's only double-centurion, has to be among the best. And if the world's most explosive batsman (Virender Sehwag) opening with Sachin Tendulkar, every bowler worth his swing has to quake in his boots.

Bring in the one-day equivalent of India's "Great Wall" at Number three (Gautam Gambhir) to be followed by the man who is the only player in the history of cricket to hit six sixes in a single over in an international game featuring a test team (Yuvraj Singh) and you have the core of a batting line-up that is virtually unshakeable.

In case any of the above has an off day, you have the likes of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina ready to belt the cherry with Yusuf Pathan patiently waiting in the pavilion to "finish" off the opponents in what is most likely to be a tournament where batsmen will dominate and bowlers will be reduced to mere canon fodder and hardly need a mention.

Given this happy scenario, one finds it difficult to focus on media reports about selectoral glitches that question the choice of a leg-spinner who can bat over a fast bowler currently in his element or a stylish batsman who can bowl off-spin and also keep wickets if required. Now that Piyush Chawla is in, Messrs Sreesanth and Rohit Sharma have to wait for four years!

While individual selection can be debated without a conclusion, the issues that present a concern and possibly exposes the soft underbelly beneath Team India's tough exterior are more strategic in nature. One recalls former captain Mohd. Azharuddin's often cryptic comment after a loss... "We batted badly, we bowled badly, we fielded badly... We lost."

How good is India's World Cup squad

From a batting perspective, India continues to rely heavily on its opening pair of Sehwag and Sachin, who between them had only played four matches on home territory during 2010. While their ability to clobber the ball is hardly in doubt, what needs to be seen is how well the duo can sustain the rigors on their bodies. One is coming back from surgery while the other is not getting any younger and may just require the occasional off day to rejuvenate himself.

This shifts the focus on to numbers three and four that is likely to be manned by Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. While the left-handed opener seems back in decent form, the same cannot be said of Yuvraj whose batting average has slipped to below the 30-mark in the 20 matches he played last year. The heartening fact though is that Yuvi did better on home ground.

And now comes the difficult task for skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who may do well to come in number five and play the finisher role that came so naturally to him in his early career. That being so, the skipper will have a problem deciding whether to bank on an in-form Virat Kohli or the out-of-form but more experienced Suresh Raina.

Given the recent form of Yusuf Pathan, where do they play him? The last ODI against South Africa was a case in point for pushing up this six-hitter in the batting order so that his natural aggression can be tempered by the presence of another accomplished batsman at the other end and not a bowler who can throw his bat around.

A crucial factor in this equation will be the over-dependence on the top-three in the line-up as the ones below have been having a none-too-happy time at the crease of late. Of course, there is every chance that playing in one's backyard could bring about a change of fortunes, but then getting the right combination may still be a challenge for Dhoni.

How good is India's World Cup squad

If the batting looks fairly settled, the bowling department seems to be a case of choosing between the devil and the deep sea, given that the selectors have been unable to find that one bowler who can control the flow of runs in the death overs. On their present form, none of the seven selected in the side has a below-five economy rate in the matches played over 24 months.

While Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh should end up playing all the matches, the toss-up will have to be between Ashish Nehra, who has taken early wickets to Munaf Patel who seems to have a better record of bowling at the death. If Dhoni picks Nehra, he will have to forego Praveen Kumar who generally gets whacked around in the end overs.

That brings us to back-up spinners who have been chosen for the tournament.
Playing three medium pacers on Indian conditions may defy logic but the option that the selectors have left Dhoni is to either opt for rookie Ravichandran Ashwin or turn to the marginally more experienced Piyush Chawla.

Between the two, Ashwin had a better year in 2010 having bagged 14 wickets in seven ODIs with an economy rate 4.92 compared to the leggie who last played for India two years ago (that is if you discount his insipid display in the last ODI at Port Elizabeth that India lost to concede the rubber to South Africa.

Given this choice, it would not be surprising if Dhoni decides to play Raina at Number 8 and hope to eke out the fifth bowler's quota from him, Pathan and Yuvraj with Virat Kohli and Sehwag also chipping in with an over or two of the same fare. Better have batsmen who can set the target or chase it down in lieu of bowlers who may have more than one off-day!

Another crucial factor that Dhoni will have to consider while selecting his playing eleven will be the choice of fielders that he would want to hide during the match. And this is where the headache will begin for the Indian captain as most of his bowlers, save for a vastly improved Harbhajan Singh, are quite slow across the turf.

Having a Munaf Patel or an Ashish Nehra on the boundary can only ensure safety when the ball is skied. Getting them to dive to stop a ball at mid-on or mid-off would mostly result in the batsman getting an easy boundary. And things do not change very drastically if the above two are replaced by the younger Ashwin or Praveen Kumar.

There is always the option of pushing the fleet footed ones like Kohli and Raina to the outskirts but that raises the question of sharp catching in the circle. Yuvraj Singh is the only one who fits the bill despite showing signs of slowing down with his reflexes in the key cover point position.

At the end of the day, it looks as if the message from the selectors is clear. Load the team with batsmen and blast the rivals for as many and more. But, this means winning the toss and batting first and for that to happen, skipper Dhoni may yet need the services of that 'toss coach' we spoke about in jest some weeks ago!

SBI beats forecast, Q3 net up 14%

Mumbai: State Bank of India, the country's top lender, posted a 14 per cent rise in quarterly net profit on Saturday, beating forecast, bolstered by credit demand growth and fee income.

The bank and rivals ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are seeing a surge in demand for loans in a rapidly growing economy, but rising interest rates are a concern for the sector.

State Bank posted a net profit of Rs 28.28 billion ($620 million) in the fiscal third quarter ended December, versus Rs 24.79 billion a year earlier.

A Reuters poll of 16 brokerages had forecast profit to grow 10 percent to Rs 27.15 billion.

Shares of State Bank of India, valued at $35 billion, rose nearly 24 per cent in 2010, compared with a 17 per cent rise in the main market and 33 per cent gain in the banking sector index.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

Indian IT sector seems to have come back to its record-breaking hiring days, with a top industry player Infosys projecting up to 1.8 lakh employees being hired by the five largest companies alone this year.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

"Growth is back and most companies are hiring in large numbers again. The top five companies are estimated to hire 1,60,000 to 1,80,000 new employees in the next 12 months," Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan said here.

Such large-scale hiring activities were last witnessed in 2007 by Indian IT companies, after which they had to cut back on hiring and even prune their existing headcount to cope up with the economic slowdown.

"In 2008, the industry saw growth coming down to single digit. Most IT companies stopped hiring employees and stopped expanding," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said at a discussion on 'sustainable Development Strategies' organised by College of Architecture here last evening.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that the growth was now back in the sector and the companies were expanding their headcount.

He further said, "The IT industry has grown fast over the last 15 years. For example, the industry had about 1.50 lakh employees in 1993, around five lakh employees in 1999 and today, the industry employs around 2 million employees."

The highest-ever hiring in the IT space was seen in 2007, when more than four lakh jobs were created in Indian IT space by all the companies together.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

After that, the hiring fell to 2.5 lakh people in 2008 and further down to 1.5 lakh in 2009 and then just above one lakh in 2010.

Industry estimates suggest that the overall hiring in India by all the IT companies together during 2011 could exceed or at least match the levels of 2007.

Besides Indian IT firms, global giants like IBM, Accenture and HP have also been hiring aggressively in the country in the past.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that multinational corporations were also looking to India to expand their markets and to create back office function and many of them are looking at Tier II and III cities to expand.

Emphasising the significance of infrastructure development in growth of these cities, he said an effective mechanism is essential to implement various development strategies.

"Industry bodies, relevant NGOs, civic bodies must all have a role to play. For example, industry bodies will be able to mobilise participation by experts. Industry will be able to provide project and programme management expertise. Civic leaders will be able to mobilise public opinion.

Thus I believe there is a higher chance of the initiatives getting implemented," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.

Take a ride in Red Planet - Mars

Take a ride in Red Planet – Mars

mars

London, Jan 22: After a gruelling 233 days of surviving on only canned foods and showering only once a week, a team of astronauts is finally ready to 'land' on the Red Planet.

The six researchers on a 520-day mock flight to Mars are all feeling strong and ready to 'land' on the Red Planet, the mission director said on Jan 22.

The crew are 31-year-old Frenchman Romain Charles and 27-year-old Italian-Colombian Diego Urbina who are engineers by training. China's 26-year-old Wang Yue is an employee at China's space training centre.

The 38-year old Russian captain, Alexey Sitev, has worked at the Russian cosmonaut training centre and the two other Russians, Sukhrob Kamolov and Alexander Smoleyevsky are doctors.

They communicate with the outside world via e-mails and video messages - occasionally delayed to give them the feel of being more than a few yards away from mission control.

Their 3.6 metre wide and 20 metre long craft, parked in a Moscow car park next to a block of flats, contains six tiny sleeping pods with cot-like beds, a living room, a eat-in kitchen, a working zone, a toilet, a laboratory and greenhouse.

And although they have been given permission to abandon the mission anytime, none of them have done so.

"They are still motivated, but there is a certain fatigue, which is natural," the Daily Mail quoted Boris Morukov as saying.

The six men are due to 'land' on Mars on February 12 and spend two days researching the planet. They then begin the long 'return flight' to Earth, expected to be the most challenging part of the mission.

"It will be very tough on the boys because of the monotony. The fatigue and the thought that the mission is over can be fraught with negative consequences," he said.

The Mars-500 experiment is being conducted by the Moscow-based Institute for Medical and Biological Problems, the European Space Agency and China's space training centre.
