IIM Kozhikode inducts 35 per cent women students in Post Graduate Programme|Education

IIM Kozhikode inducts 35 per cent women students in Post Graduate Programme|Education

Kochi: Continuing on its path of gender diversity for the second consecutive year, Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) has taken in large number of women students, about 35 per cent, for its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) for the 2011-13 batch.

1

Of the total 341 students for the PGP, 121 are women, IIM-K said in a press release here. This is against last year's intake of 30 per cent.

Out of the women admitted, 84 have Common Admission Test percentile between 90 and 100.

Institute Director Debashis Chatterjee says 'giving prominence to girl students has become a trend in IIM-Kozhikode.

Last year also IIM-K had the maximum number of women students among all IIMs. Girls have always performed better than boys. Even in summer placements, they have been placed in better companies, he said, adding. this was all on merit.

2

'The female students have brought greater diversity both in the learning environment as well as in their academic and social profiles. It is truly a transformation process at IIM-K whereby students whose parental income is less than a lakh per year end up with top jobs around the world', he said.

IIM-K has been the trendsetter for business schools in the country with its consistent gender diversity drive, which is now emulated by others, the release said.

IIMK had implemented the Government norms on reservations to the backward and the economically weaker sections, the release said.

Out of 121 women students, 91 have engineering background, while 15 are either commerce or economics graduate. Three women are doctors and one is a law graduate. A male student is from medical background.

3

Chatterjee says there has been a change in income profile of parents of students coming to the institute. Though this could be a trend among all IIMs, in Kozhikode 7.94 per cent students have parents whose income is less than Rs one lakh per annum, 25 per cent students have parents earning Rs 10 lakh and above. Rest of the students have parents earning Rs 4-5 lakh per annum (12.70 per cent) and Rs 5-6 lakh per annum (8.73 per cent).

In IIM-Kozhikode, a majority of students -- 63.97 per cent have parents working either in government, PSUs or NGOs. Only 9.72 per cent students are children of professionals or private sector executives, the release said. Children of businessmen comprise 13.77 per cent of total students in the Institute.

Maximum students (12.65 per cent) are from Delhi followed by 12.05per cent from Maharashtra. Students from Uttar Pradesh have fared very well and comprise 9.71 per cent of its total strength.

Top 10 Best Board Games (For Ruining Friendships) 2011

Top 10  Best Board Games (For Ruining Friendships) 2011

Nowadays, nobody plays board games unless they’re out of alcohol and the Xbox is broken—those simple diversions of paper and plastic just can’t hold our attention in a modern world full of entertainment that’s flashy and action packed. Also, all board games are seemingly designed to produce nothing but anger, misery and broken relationships. Here are the ten worst offenders.

1. Diplomacy

games -1

Risk may lead to your friends stabbing you in the back, but Diplomacy actually encourages it. It’s impossible to win without betraying someone—and the larger the web of lies you can spin, the more successful you’ll be.

But even worse is when the other players openly agree to wipe you from the map, and no amount of scheming, cajoling or begging can persuade them otherwise. You never know just how heartless your friends are until they’re putting aside their differences to destroy you with cold, calculated efficiency.

There’s zero random chance in Diplomacy, so if your friends decide you need to be eliminated there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. And while you hate them for it, you know you would have done the exact same thing to them. At that moment comes the realization that, deep down, you were never really friends at all.

2. Risk

2

Risk is a game of luck disguised as a game of strategy, which means you can’t help but feel like an idiot every time you lose to your dumb friends, even though all they managed to do was roll higher numbers than you.

The only real tactical element comes from the negotiating, which always ends in tragedy. Alliances disappear faster than heterosexuality at a Lady Gaga concert; the second someone can exchange a set of Risk cards for some armies they’re going to turn around and crush you like the bug you are.

If you manage to survive the assault you’ll trade in some cards of your own and return the favor, and the two of you will go back and forth in a bitterly personal conflict until the guy who spent the entire game holed up in Australia sweeps the board in a single turn. You and your friend will blame each other for the fact that you both lost, and your fractured relationship will teach you lessons that apply to both Risk and life: never let a conflict get personal, and never trust anyone from Australia.

3. Monopoly3

If you didn’t expect Monopoly to show up on this list, you haven’t played Monopoly. The game’s winner is always determined in the opening minutes, but their victory is stretched out over the following 12 hours. And they are never, ever magnanimous. They’ll savoir every last one of your fake dollars, and mortgaged properties are like an aphrodisiac to them.

Even your sad attempts to steal from the bank won’t save you when you land on your friend’s Boardwalk hotel and they cackle with unhinged glee. As you haggle with them to stave off your inevitable bankruptcy, it becomes obvious that they’re a sadist who revels in your pain. You and his other victims will offer to surrender so you can stop playing Monopoly and go do something productive with your lives, but he’ll refuse. Why? Because he wants to see you suffer.

When the game finally ends, your friendship has morphed into the bond between a torturer and his victim. You’ll never be able to look him in the eye again, nor will you ever want to.

4. The Settlers of Catan

4

Leave it to the Germans to create a game based entirely around screwing other people out of natural resources. Sure, on the surface Catan is about developing a settlement—but in reality the primary goal is to make your friends beg for your precious sheep.

Catan is all about resource management, and being the only person with a supply of a certain resource is like being given carte blanche to act like a douchebag. “What’s that? You want some wheat? Give me all your wood, and get me a beer from the kitchen.”

It only gets worse as the game goes on and players become just a select few resources away from victory. “What do I want in exchange for my stone? I want you to cut yourself.

Ostensibly, the key to winning Catan is to plan ahead and negotiate shrewdly. But in reality, it all comes down to who can get away with being the biggest dick to their friends. And in that game, there are no winners.

5. Mastermind

5

Mastermind combines the action packed thrills of code breaking with the ability to make your friends feel retarded for not being able to figure out your devious code of “red red red red.” The Enigma machine had nothing on that!

The mere suggestion of playing Mastermind should be enough to ruin a friendship (the game is less exciting than doing your taxes while listening to a Gore Vidal audiobook), but the real problem is that it’s a two player that one person always takes much more seriously than their opponent. One player will spend an agonizing amount of time analyzing every move, while the other just guesses at random until they run out of turns. And they’ll each win half the time.

One person gets bored, the other gets frustrated, and nobody ends up a “mastermind.” By the time the game is over, you’ll both remember that the only reason you even own Mastermind is so you can hide your copy of Sexopoly behind it when your parents visit.

6. Pictionary

6

Pictionary is a great game for kids—it encourages them to be artistic and creative, and you can excuse their crappy drawing skills because they’re young. But when adults play there’s no mercy, and the game quickly descends into a competition to see who’s the best at mocking their opponent’s artwork. At first, it’s all in good fun. But then somebody crosses a line, and the insults get ruthlessly personal. “Oh, that was supposed to be a bottle of pop? I just assumed it was beer. I mean, you do have that ‘thing’ with alcohol. Oops, sorry, I ‘forgot’ that was a secret!”

Sooner or later someone will decide to draw nothing but penises, and it all goes downhill from there. By the end of the game there’s a tacit agreement to never speak of it again, and the players will be just a little more distant for the rest of their lives.

7. Parcheesi

7

The “race to move your dinky plastic pieces around a stupid board” genre is bad enough already, but Parcheesi is the only game that allows you to bring your opponent’s progress to a screeching halt. If a player puts two of their pieces on the same square then no piece behind them can advance, regardless of the number of turns, profanities or threats of violence that go by.

If your timing is lucky, your barricade will make it impossible for your friends to do anything except sit and glare at you. Sure, once you’re out of other moves you’ll be forced to abandon your blockade, but by that point you’ll be so far ahead of everyone else that the game is all but over anyway. And beyond the ability to screw your friends the game is pure luck, which means Parcheesi is basically Candy Land for sociopaths.

8. Battleship

8

Here’s how a typical game of Battleship plays out:

1. You spend an eternity planning the perfect placement for your armada, while your friend plunks his down in five seconds.

2. All of your friend’s stupid random guesses hit your ships, while each and every one of your carefully calculated shots misses. And while you have no proof, you just know your friend is lying.

3. Your entire fleet is sunk, and only after admitting defeat do you look at your friend’s board and realize you were hitting all along; he was just too dumb to read the grid properly.

4. Tempers flare, and, inevitably, someone gets a patrol boat in the eye.

5. The game gets shoved back into the closet.

6. Five years later, you find your copy of Battleship behind a stack of magazines and, forgetting how much you hate it, you invite your friend to play.

7. Repeat.

9. Twister

9

The only game that comes with a risk of a sexual harassment suit every time you play, Twister is the perfect diversion for hormone riddled teenagers and the most socially awkward one imaginable for everyone else.

We all think the guy who suggests a game of Twister is being a creep—the best case scenario is that you accidentally see down some girl’s shirt and get slapped, and it’s only worse if you’re having a guy’s night out and your friend fools no one by saying “we’ll only play it ironically.” But since we’re too polite to point it out we go through the motions, desperately hoping the next call won’t be “right hand—green, your face—Steve’s crotch.”

Games are supposed to bring friends closer together, but they’re not supposed to do that literally—it doesn’t count as quality time if the time is spent discovering the scent of your pal’s deodorant. Come on people, we already have a way to do something with your friends that will embarrass and shame you forever: it’s called binge drinking.

10. Scrabble

10

Despite what the commercials claim, Scrabble is nothing more than a game about being silently judged by your friends—and their verdict will not be kind.

As you stare at your tiles, racking your mind for a decent word, you’re all too aware that with every passing second the other players are readjusting their opinion of your intelligence. The pressure only grows as the minutes drag on; the longer your friends are forced to wait, the higher their expectations will be. Expectations that you and your four Os can’t possibly meet.

Finally, after half an hour, you play “dog,” feeling a deep sense of shame with each tile you place. As you sheepishly tally your six points, somebody else flashes a smug grin and plays “quixotic,” scoring 119 in the process. “Don’t feel bad,” they’ll say, with a voice that suggests you should feel as bad as possible, “I was just lucky.

Your next friend will look up some stupid two letter word on his iPhone, and the one after that take the spot you wanted to use next. When it’s your turn again, all you’ll want is to draw an F and U so that you can send your friends a message. But instead you’ll get another two Os, and the cycle of shame will begin anew.

Chinese auto major JAC eyes India entry |Business News

Chinese auto major JAC eyes India entry |Business News

0

Willing to partner existing players; to begin with commercial vehicle launch.

The battle in the Indian automobile industry is set to intensify with Chinese auto maker Jianghuai Automobile Company (JAC) planning to launch commercial vehicles as well as passenger cars.

“India would be one of the key markets for JAC. To begin with, we are looking at introducing commercial vehicles, but eventually we’ll launch passenger cars as well,” said a spokesperson. He did not specify a timeline for an entry but indicated it was open to collaborations to sell products.

“We will probably make an independent entry in India, but may co-operate with existing players, depending on the situation,” he said.

JAC, founded in 1964, is the eighth-largest automobile company in China. The company sold 460,000 units to clock revenue of $2 billion last year. It aims at recording growth of 30 per cent this year to sell 600,000 vehicles. The volumes are comparable with what India’s second-largest car maker, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, targets to sell this financial year.

JAC has a comprehensive line-up of vehicles in China, which includes light, medium and heavy duty trucks, buses, multi-purpose vehicles and sedans. JAC also manufactures gearboxes, engines, auto components and engineering products. The company recently launched an electric vehicle, Tong Yue, in the Chinese market.

1

With India slated to become the fourth largest automobile market globally over the next five years, Chinese companies such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Beiqi Foton have all been evincing interest in commencing operations in the country.

“A lot of cross-pollination will take place between the automobile industries in India and China. SAIC has already made an entry and manufacturers such as JAC and Beiqi Foton are working out the modalities of starting operations. These companies have products that are a strategic fit for the Indian market. Some of them have already made enquiries regarding the vendor base available for starting operations here,”said an industry source.

SAIC, present through a partnership with General Motors, is working on introducing five new models in the country by 2013. While two light commercial vehicles from the SAIC portfolio are slated to hit the Indian roads by the end of this year, another three passenger cars are proposed from the GM-SAIC alliance at a later date.

In May, Beiqi Foton had announced an investment of Rs 1,676 crore to set up a facility in western Maharashtra. The company is exploring options to sell light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles here. Foton Motor, a subsidiary of Beijing Automobile Group Co Ltd, is the world’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer after Daimler. The company sold 682,800 vehicles in 2010.

Recent times have witnessed a buzz in the Indian commercial vehicle segment, which clocked sales of 6,76,408 units last financial year, with the entry of global players like Navistar and Marcopolo, among others. While the commercial vehicle segment recorded growth of 27 per cent last year, passenger vehicle sales grew 29 per cent to 2.52 million units.

Cricket News Sachin is number one Indian batsman: Walsh

Cricket News Sachin is number one Indian batsman: Walsh

tendu

Kingston: There seems no end to the list of Sachin Tendulkar admirers and the latest to laud the Indian batting icon is West Indian fast bowling great Courtney Walsh.

"For me, Sachin has been the number one Indian batsman. Sometimes he has challenged me and at other times I have done so and we were very competitive. When we catch up there is respect from both sides," stated Walsh, who took 519 wickets in 132 Tests, making him the fifth greatest wicket-taker of all time.

Only Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets), Shane Warne (708), Anil Kumble (619) and Glenn McGrath (563) have more wickets than Walsh in Test history.

Walsh was speaking on the occasion of a stand at Sabina Park being named after him on the opening day of the first Test on Monday.

st

Walsh sees a lot of good in modern-day cricket but feels most of them are not with West Indian cricket.

"Most changes are for good but in the West Indies team, consistency is not there, confidence is not there. There is potential and some are very good fast bowlers. We are working and I am sure we would be back soon," he said.

Even after playing for so long, Walsh believes he could have carried on a bit longer but wanted to make way for some promising fast bowlers

"I left a little early. West Indies was touring Zimbabwe and I though it was time to move on, give youngsters a break.

"But those youngsters didn't come through and so I could have carried on a little longer," he said.

Walsh and Curtly Ambrose set up a deadly attack for the West Indies in the '90s and were the last great Caribbean fast bowlers to emerge from the region.

"We never competed against each other; we complimented each other. Our styles were different. We tried to do what the team required.

"I never sledged for it was important to maintain the spirit of the game. For me the ball did the talking," he said. Walsh named Michael Holding, who also belongs to Jamaica, as his fast bowling idol.

"I watched him as a kid and later we together played for the same club, Jamaica and of course West Indies.

Strawberries and cream would be fetched as talk would shift from Roger Federer to Rafael Nadal and from the William sisters to Andy Murray. In the lead up to one of the most traditional contests in the history of sport, MSN India takes a look at the players who made the hallowed portals of Wimbledon their own.

98 kg gold, Rs.12 crore cash found in Sathya Sai's chamber in Prashanti Nilayam

Hyderabad: Around Rs.12 crore in cash and nearly 100 kg of gold were found in the personal chamber of late spiritual guru Sathya Sai Baba at Prashanti Nilayam, his ashram in Puttaparthi in Anantapur district, a trust official said Friday.

A day after the Sathya Sai Central Trust opened the locks of the Baba's personal chamber, Yajur Mandir, his nephew and trust member R.J. Ratnakar Friday evening announced details of the cash and valuables found inside.

He told reporters at Puttaparthi that the trust members found Rs.11.56 crore, 98 kg gold and gold jewelery, 307 kg silver articles in the personal chamber where nobody was alloweed to enter. Ratnakar said the cash would be deposited with the State Bank of India (SBI).

Some bank officials and about 15 disciples of Baba, in the presence of trust members, have since Thursday counted the cash with the help of currency counting machines. The Yajur Mandir is an opulent residence built by Baba.

Ratnakar said Baba's residential quarter was opened in the presence of all five members of the trust. A former judge of the Supreme Court, A.P. Misra, and former Karanataka High Court judge Vaidyanathan were present as independent witnesses while an assessor approved by the Income Tax department was there to evaluate the gold, jewellery and silver.

Ratnakar claimed the idea behind the whole exercise was to make an inventory of all the items in a transparent manner.

The trust reportedly found gold statues of Hindu gods and diamonds.

Ratnakar, however, denied that they found any will of Baba. He also evaded queries if the trust found any documents about Baba's personal caregiver Satyajit. There are speculations that the spiritual guru wanted to make Satyajit his successor or a member of the powerful trust.

Yajur Mandir, also known as Yajurveda Mandir, had remained closed ever since Sathya Sai Baba was hospitalised March 28 with multi-organ dysfunction. He died April 24.

There were allegations by a section of devotees that large amounts of cash and gold jewelery were shipped out of the place when Baba was battling for life. The trust, however, has denied this.

Some devotees were also demanding that the locks of Baba's personal chamber be opened in their presence or at least in the presence of media persons.

The trust, which manages the huge spiritual empire led by Baba, owns assets in Puttaparthi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities.

Meanwhile, the trust has decided to open Yajur Mandir for devotees on July 15. It also plans to open a museum at Prashanti Nilayam to showcase the personal belongings of the spiritual guru.

IIIT-A develops breast cancer diagnostic kit|Science

IIIT-A develops breast cancer diagnostic kit|Science

The kit is portable, cost-effective and gives out readings in under a minute!

iiit-0

Allahabad: An Indo-Russian scientific venture here claims to have come up with a new diagnostic kit for early detection of breast cancer at a much lower cost and without requiring highly-qualified medical professionals.

The new machine has been developed by experts at the state-owned Indian Institute for Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) in coordination with the Moscow-based Institute of Radio Engineering, which is a part of the Russian Academy of Sciences, IIIT-A Director M D Tiwari told PTI here.

"The new machine is different from the tools being used at present to detect breast cancer. While existing machines have voluminous structures and problems in portability and involve high cost, the latest kit can be carried in a briefcase and is free from technical complexities," he said.

The major component of the invention includes specially-developed software, programming language and sensors that help in identification of the breast cancer cells. "Unlike existing diagnostic kits, the new machine will not cause any damage to tissues and cells of the patient," Tiwari claimed.

The new machine weighs only 1.5 kg and is capable of making a "non-invasive diagnosis of breast cancer at a very low operating and maintenance cost," the IIIT-A director claimed. He said a single unit of the machine costs around Rs 12 lakh and just Rs 150 per patient for diagnosis.

"It can be easily attached to an ordinary laptop connected with the sensors and it will thereafter give its findings within 50 seconds," Tiwari said.

He said the software capable of deciphering the signals emanating through the sensor pads placed on the breast of the patient has been developed by the IIIT-A team while the hardware and mechanical and electronic components have been developed by Russian scientists.

"The clinical testing of the machine has already been undertaken at different locations across India and Russia and the result so far has been highly satisfactory," Tiwari said.

At present, the machine is functional at IIIT-A's health centres at the institute's main campus here and the extension campus at Amethi, he said.

The IIIT-A Director said efforts were on for securing a patent for the new machine and proper marketing and commercial distribution at the national as well as international levels.

He said the entire endeavour, right from the concept phase to the development of the software and the hardware, took around two-and-a-half years.

The effort was aimed at developing "a unique smart machine that could help even a layman identify breast cancer at an early stage, making treatment easier and more effective," he said.

"We are confident that due to its unique characteristics, the new machine would be of great help in rural areas where costly diagnostic options are often not feasible and trained professionals are not easily available," Tiwari said.
