Crescent City CA – First tsunami waves hit California’s Crescent City | Tsunami Triggered

CRESCENT CITY – Waves are beginning to surge slightly along California’s northern coast near the Oregon border from a tsunami triggered by the massive earthquake in Japan. The tide began rising shortly after 7:30 a.m. along beaches in Crescent City, where the tsunami was expected to hit the hardest in California. Officials predicted that waves could reach as high as 7 feet.

Local officials have been activating tsunami warning sirens along the Del Norte and Humboldt county coasts throughout the morning and have urged residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground.Residents of a northern California harbor town once hit by a deadly tsunami were preparing for another as waves spawned by the massive Japan quake move closer to the western U.S. coast.Fishermen in Crescent City were firing up their crab boats and leaving the harbor to ride out an expected swell, while residents living in a trailer park nearby are heading to higher ground

Police were also cruising low-lying areas, spreading the word to evacuate. Boat owner John Brunsing says it isn’t so much the swell that’s dangerous but floating piers that get pushed over dock pilings when big waves hit.Retired insurance agent Steve Wiley who lives at the Bayshore RV park say he was told of the evacuation by the sheriff who knocked on the door.A 1964 tsunami killed 11 people in Crescent City
