Shortest Man in the World Guinness Record
Guinness World Records today received word of a new contender for the title of Smallest Living Man. Junrey Balawing, 17, from the Philippines claims to be 56 cm (1 ft 10 in) tall – almost 11 cm (4.3 in) shorter than the current world record holder. However, Guinness World Records guidelines for this title stipulate that candidates must be at least 18 years old and be officially measured three times a day, both standing up and lying flat.
The current Shortest Man in the world is Khagendra Thapa Magar (Nepal, b.14 October 1992), who measures 67.08 cm (2 ft 2.41 ft) tall, as verified at Fewa City Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal, on 14 October 2010. A Guinness World Records Adjudicator flew out to Nepal to measure Khagendra on the eve of his 18th birthday and certified the record.
Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said: ‘We’re intrigued by such a remarkable claim – if it’s true, it would make Junrey not just the Shortest Living Man but the Shortest Man who ever lived, beating Gul Mohammed of India (1957–97) at 57 cm, 22.5 in. Of course, he’s still not 18 years old, and it’s unclear how – and how many times – he was measured. Until we assess him in person, Khagendra remains officially the Shortest Man.”
