20 Most Addictive Sites on the Web, 2011 - 2010

2010: guilty pleasure websites that will suck you in

These websites are a guilty pleasure for many... they have an addictive appeal, and lend themselves to at least 30 mins of browsing per day, depending on your personal tastes. As you peruse the changing list below, remember that "SFW" stands for "Safe for Work", where the sites have clean content suitable for most viewers. Be warned, however: unless the site is expressly tagged as SFW below, be careful before you open it. Also: if you have a site to suggest for this ever-changing list: submit your favorite addictive website here

...

1. Zeus Box Wallpaper

SFW: Everybody loves wallpaper for their monitor. Whether you have a regular or a widescreen display, you'll absolutely love the visuals at Zeus Box.  Movies, artwork, cute animals, steamy women, expensive sports cars, nature scenes... you're bound to find something you like at this site.

2. Cute Overload

SFW: Even if you're not a pet owner , you'll enjoy this website.  Cuteoverload.com is a photo blog of user-submitted pet photos and videos. The objective is to showcase the adorable and endearing qualities of our four-legged and avian family members.  Whether you're a softy at heart, or a macho tough guy, you're guaranteed to get your daily dose of "awwwwwwww" at this addictive photo website.

3. Overstock.com

SFW: Overstock.com is about upscale bargain shopping. As a 3rd party clearance center, Overstock helps retailers unload surplus of brand name and designer consumer items.  DKNY clothing, Samsung cameras, Callaway golf clubs, Tag Heuer wristwatches, Nine West shoes, memory foam bedding, Vincenzi men's suits, designer travel gear for pets... some absolutely beautiful products are available here, often for less than 50% of retail price.

4. Despair: Demotivational Posters

SFW: Here is sarcasm and cynicism, made beautiful.  As an antithesis to motivational posters, Despair.com takes inspirational photography and captions it with negative and cynical slogans.  The effect is splendid, and is guaranteed  laughter in offices everywhere.  In fact, you might want to show this site to your office coworkers.

5. There: I Fixed It!

SFW: "Kludging" is about poorly assembling a solution to a problem.  In the case of ThereIfixedIt.com, we are talking about kludging to the tenth power! See some outlandish examples of how to fix automobile steering, toilet problems, and home renovations.  These are not photoshopped images... every submission here is a candid photo of real-life DIY nightmares. This safe-for-work site is guaranteed for good chuckles, and you could probably show this to your boss and have her laugh with you, too.

6. F***MyLife

You think your life sucks? Here are thousands of users sharing awful anecdotes and personal venting.  How a boyfriend ruined someone's day, or how a teacher crushed a young person's esteem; how the mechanic shafted someone on a repair job, or how a beautiful girl destroyed a person's self concept. Pitiful? Yes. Addictive to read this stuff? Absolutely.

7. You Tube Related Video

SFW: It's not just that these amateur and professional videos are very engaging... it's that there are thousands of them linked together.  If you start to browse the column of "related videos" to the right of each clip, you'll be hooked.  For example: you start watching "car reviews Honda CRV", and pretty soon, you are browsing the car reviews of every one of its competitors.  Even better: search for "talking dogs or "Einstein the Genius Bird" and you'll be laughing for hours.  Addictiveness factor: 5/5

8. FaFaRAZZI: Pop Culture Made Into a Game

Forget fantasy baseball, football, and hockey.  If you like pop culture and enjoy following celebrities in the news, then you will absolutely revel in FaFaRAZZI.com.  Score points for every time Tiger Woods apologizes on TV.  Advance your team every time America's Next Top Model eliminates a contestant.  Choose the winner of Lady Gaga vs. Rihanna.  Nifty!

9. Fail Blog

"Schadenfreude" is the German word for "deriving pleasure from the misfortune of others". FailBlog delivers schadenfreude in wholesale servings! This photo and video blog captures some of the most tragic human mistakes you will ever see. Here you'll find horrifying examples of car parking errors, sports mishaps, advertising faux pas, bad clothing choices, and absurd human inventions.  Like many of the addictive websites in this list: there are no special effects or professional actors involved: just regular everyday people doing absolutely idiotic things. Addictiveness: 5/5

10. Totally Look Like

Visual people will absolutely love this.  Random associations of images from around the world: trees that resemble phones, vegetables that resemble people, gargoyles that resemble pets, celebrities that resemble your cousin.  Submit your own, if you feel like it.  At the very least: you'll be mesmerized by some of the curious combinations at this photo blog.

11.People of Walmart

No, these are not actors or clowns. These are real people captured in candid photos at the local Walmart store.  The choices in fashion and lifestyle are absolutely shocking, and this site has garnered much controversial attention because it allegedly typecasts people.  But, truth be told: this site is an addiction for millions of viewers.  Come see what the fuss is all about, and decide for yourself.

12. Sh*tBrix.com: Puzzle Photos and Strange Phenomena

Definitely NOT safe for work, sh*tbrix.com is a photography blog where users comment on what they see in the pictures. Two things really make this site addictive: 1) the photos themselves contain obscure content that is often challenging to discern. 2) the users make some really outlandish comments about each photo.  The content is usually very adult, so be careful about your surroundings before you visit here.  But you might really enjoy this strange and bizarre site.

13. Facebook

(Partially SFW) Whether you get sucked into Farmville and Mafia Wars, or if you just want to stay in touch with your friends and family, Facebook will burn hours of your time.  See the funny video posted by your old high school friend. Comment on the photos of Jeff's new Volkswagen van. Read up on your air force friend's current posting in Florida.

Office warning: while the content of Facebook is largely benign, most employers will frown upon seeing this on your screen at work. Facebooking is associated with hours and hours of time wasting, be warned!

14. eBay: The World's Largest Marketplace

(Somewhat SFW)  eBay really is the world's biggest marketplace.  It is the evolution of the modern flea market, with 21st century security and payment controls in place.  Traditional competitive auctions comprise about 65% of eBay's transactions, but you can also make straight purchases with "Buy It Now" and "Make Me an Offer" options. Millions of dollars transact on eBay every single day. Thousands of people even make eBay selling their fulltime career.  If you like eBay, you will LOVE eBay. WARNING: if you have an addictive shopping personality, this website can quickly drain your finances.

15. PopCap Free Online Games

SFW: (well, as safe for work as a games website can be). PopCap offers some of the most addictive free games on the Internet today.  Many of these games involve slow-motion play, where you can stop play to continue doing other things (like your daily job). Longtime favorites like Bejeweled, Zuma, Bookworm, Pixelus, Atomica and Insaniquarium will keep most people occupied for hours at a time.  Loads of fun, and the price is perfect.

16. Fark: The Bizarre News Aggregator

SFW: Fark is an aggregator for bizarre and weird news.  That means: offbeat and unusual news stories from around the globe are assembled at this one website for quick browsing. Read about kangaroos goaded into fighting clowns, cross-dressing sensitivity training for policemen, undertakers who raise money by offering free limo rides, naked air traffic controllers, homeless people who become famous chefs, robbers who target celebrity homes, chickens who adopt puppies.  Bizarre? Yes. Addictive? You better believe it...

17. TruuConfessions.com

Some people just need to confess their sins to the world.  Hidden fears, repressed hate, dirty secrets, embarassing faux pas moments, overwhelming guilt... you'll get all this juice and more at TruuConfessions.com. Shocking, pitiful, horrific...yes.  It's also really addictive to read these public confessions.  Have you had your daily helping of neuroses today?

18. WonderHowTo.com

SFW: How to breathe fire. How to flirt like a pro. How to cut a beer bottle in half. How to tell the difference between a prostitute and an undercover cop.  How to steal a Guinness record for free throwing. How to turn your car into an armored tank. How to levitate a Zippo flame. How to detect nukes.  WonderHowTo.com is a delicious buffet of engineering, ingenuity, and curiousity. Addiction factor = 5/5

19. Urlesque: Exposing Bits of the Web

Urlesque is arguably the highest quality Web aggregator for the bizarre and the curious of 2010. Somewhat like Fark and 2Leep.com, this site compiles hundreds of bizarre links into one site for convenient browsing. What makes Urlesque special is the editorial efforts behind the scenes: these folks sift through piles of drivel to choose only those links that really have maximum universal appeal.  See the most iconic Internet videos of all time, skydiving in a kayak, porta-potty pranks, people who live in grass houses, homemade hovercrafts, bar mitzvah rap music, the entire office lipsynching to Harvey Danger, and the now-famous Roomba-riding cat.

20. 2Leep: The Best Hub for Bizarre News

This site is Addictive with a capital "A".  2Leep stands out because it is a hub of thousands of fascinating blogs and photo collections from around the world. See videos of trucks being lifted by the wind. See bizarre furniture and pet hairdos. See Bob Dullam's homemade batmobile. See the worst celebrity twins of all time. The content is so dynamic at 2Leep, you'll want to visit twice a day to see the updates.  Addictiveness factor: 6/5
